16 Days of African Magic Northbound
Experience the magic of Namibia and South Africa in an affordable
and fun-filled way aboard the Shongololo Dune Express. This tour has
been extended to include Cape Town, South Africa to offer you the
best of both countries. Taking in the most popular attractions of
Namibia and including remote and stunningly beautiful destinations
in the western part of South Africa, such as the Augrabies Falls,
Graaf Reinet, Swartberg Pass and the Karoo, this is a truly spectacular
tour.
DAY 1
CAPE TOWN - South Africa
These two days are spent with the same guide touring the Cape Peninsular
and the City.
Inclusive Options:
Highlights visited are Table Mountain (at own costs) The Castle,
the SA Museum and Company Gardens. Bo-Kaap and its Museum, Victoria
and Alfred Waterfront, District 6 and its Museum.
Day 2
Cape of Good Hope and nature reserve. Cape Point, Boulders, Penguin
Colony Chapman's Peak Drive (closed in bad weather). Hout Bay, Kirstenbosch
Botanical Gardens and Kalk Bay Fishing Harbour.
Day 3
Winelands-paarl-Stelenbosch Franschhoerk, South Africa
Visit the Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, guests may
choose the Historical Village Walk, The Wine Tasting or The Whale
Watching Tour (when in season)
Inclusive Options
Historical Village Walk - A historical and cultural option. In Paarl,
guests visit the Afrikaans Taal Monument and does a City tour before
driving over the Helshoogte Pass to the University Town of Stellenbosch,
also known as the City of Oaks. It is the second oldest town in
South Africa. Visit the Village Museum; Walk up Dorp Street with
its historical houses and with a stopover at Oom Sammie se Winkel.
Our tour will end in Franschhoek at the Huguenot Monument. One wine-tasting
is also included.
Wine Tasting - Guests visit the 3 main wine regions of the Cape,
Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl. Our first stop is the Afrikaans
Taal Monument in Paarl. Next, guests drive to Stellenbosch, a University
Town with its fine example of Cape Dutch Houses along Dorp Street
and Oom Sammie se Winkel; Guests drive to Franschhoek via the Helshoogte
Pass and visit Boschendal Manor House Museum with its fine example
of Cape Dutch Architecture. Onwards to Franschhoek and its stories
of the French Huguenots. Three wine tastings and one cellar tour
are included.
Day 4
Klein Karoo, South Africa
From Matjiesfontein, the guests will then take a leisurely drive
over the Seven Week Pass, past the Lutheran Mission to Oudtshoorn
- watch out for soaring eagles and sure-footed klipspringers on
your way to Oudtshoorn which earned it the Feather Capital in 1900,
the world now the capital of the Klein Karoo. You will have a choice
of two options (as stated below). In the afternoon, guests ascend
and descend this most spectacular Swartberg Pass, built in 1888
by convict labor. This dry-packed stone walls carries the road to
over 1553 meters above sea level, where you can spot the ruins of
a the hotel and tiny jail, into the Groot Karoo, to Prince Albert,
a small town lost in time.
Inclusive Options:
Cango Caves - Relive the discovery of the complex when a herdsman
of a colonial farmer "Van Zyl" ventured deep into the
caves and lowered himself into the unknown darkness, soon realizing
to his wonder that he had entered the cavern of breathtaking proportions
and awe-inspiring natural beauty.
Oudtshoorn Ostrich Show Farm - In this district, the world's largest
flightless bird is commercially farmed on a large scale.
Day 5
Graaf Reinet and Beaufort West, South Africa
Inclusive Options:
Graaf Reinet: Guests will take a trip through this historical town
with over 200 of its buildings declared as national monuments. Guests
then visit the Karoo National Park encircling Graaf-Reinet. This
16500 hectare reserve includes one of the most striking sights in
South Africa: The Valley of Desolation and The Rynevelds Pass Dam.
The Valley of Desolation is a geological phenomenon. The sheer cliffs
rise from the floor of the valley, which is strewn with huge rocks
and flanked by rock pinnacles.
Beaufort West: Enjoy a leisurely walk through Beaufort West, birth
place of Professor Chris Barnard who did the first open heart operation
in 1969. Guests will also see the old Boer War Blockhouses. In the
afternoon, guests visit the Karoo National Park. The great Karoo
is one of the world's most unique arid zones; it is an ancient,
fossil-rich land with the largest succulents found anywhere on earth.
Here baby ostriches can be handled. Guests can sit on ostriches,
while the more daring can even ride on these giant birds
Day 6
Upington. South Africa
Upington is the oasis of the Northern Cape, and the heart of the
area's Winelands. Inclusive Options
In the morning, guests drive to The Augrabies with a short stop
at Kakamas with its water wheels and irrigation canals. Guests will
spend a bit of time at The Augrabies where the mighty Orange River
thunders, one of the great spectaculars of the tour. And then visit
a Dry Fruit Cooperative where one will view a video of the drying
process. Or visit the S A Raisin Factory where one will get first
hand information on the wine and raisin industry. In the afternoon,
guests will visit The Spitzkop Nature Reserve.
Day 7
Fish River, Namibia
Guests cross the border into Namibia early in the morning and arrive
at Holoog siding around lunchtime. A light lunch will be served
on board the train (own cost) ZAR30.00 The Fish River canyon is
one of Namibia's most spectacular geological phenomena lying in
the lower reaches of Namibia's longest rivers, The Fish River.
Inclusive Options
Spend the morning on the train or catching up with writing post
cards while traveling through the Namibian Border. This afternoon
guests visit the Fish River Canyon, the second largest in the world.
Day 8
Sossusvlei - Namibia
The highlight in the Southern Region is Sossusvlei with Monumental
Dunes. The highest of which is estimated to be 325 m. These Star
Shaped Dunes are a sought after topic for artists and photographers.
Sesriem Canyon .Sesriem derives its name from the time early pioneers
tied six lengths of rawhide thongs together to draw water pools
of water 30-40 meters below at the foot of the gorge.
Inclusive Options
Guests depart from Mariental for the scenic drive via the Tsaris
Mountains stopping over at Maltahoehe for tea (own cost) to the
Sesriem Canyon where centuries of erosion have incised the narrow
gorge of one kilometer in length. A packed lunch at ZAR 20.00 will
be provided and charged to the account. After leaving Sesriem Canyon,
Guests depart to their tented camp in Sesriem (Gateway to Sossusvlei)
where they settle in and relax before taking a ride into the Dunes
to view the magnificent sunset and then return to camp to experience
the African night sky around the campfire.
Day 9
Sossusvlei, Namibia
Inclusive Options
The guests will leave early to catch a glimpse of the magnificent
sunrise in the dunes, and for the more energetic, climb up Dune
45 and experience the beautiful sunrise from the top of Dune 45.
After the breathtaking view of the sunrise, one can take a 4x4 drive
into the dunes (at own cost) or otherwise enjoy a packed breakfast
supplied at the picnic area. The guests will start heading back
for our scenic drive back to Windhoek to rejoin the train before
continuing to Swakopmund
Day 10
Swakopmund, Namibia
Founded in 1892 during the German Colonial Rule, it served as the
territory's main Harbour. Today this quaint Desert Town is hedged
by the desert and the lush green lawns. Palm trees and carefully-tended
public gardens, enhance the sea.
Inclusive Options
Guests depart the train at Ebony Siding to visit the `Spitskoppe`
Guests then drive to Swakopmund via `The Welwitschia Trail` well
known for its Moon Landscape and Lichens. In the afternoon, guests
will visit Walvis Bay and surroundings, including a stop to the
wetlands, feeding ground for the flamingo colony, and then past
the salt works. The more energetic will have the chance to climb
one of the highest dunes in the world Dune 7.
Day 11
Swakopmund, Namibia
Inclusive options:
This morning guests travel North along the Skeleton Coast to the
Cape Cross seal colony via Henties Bay. The afternoon is spent at
leisure in Swakopmund, Namibia's Premier Holiday Resort with well-preserved
German Colonial Architecture.
Day 12
Swakopmund, Namibia
Today guest will have time to do all the Tour Add-Ons at leisure.
Day 13
Etosha National Park, Namibia
Etosha owes its unique landscape to the Etosha Pan, a vast shallow
depression of approximately 5000 km. A series of waterholes along
the southern edge of the pan, guarantee rewarding and often-spectacular
game viewing. Until the 1960's, Etosha was the largest game reserve
in the world. For political reasons, reduced by 77 % to 22270 sq.
km., it is still one of the largest Parks in Africa.
Inclusive options
Guests travel from Otjiwarongo Station to Etosha 'The great white
place of dry water'. The Park is home to 114 mammal species and
over 340 bird species. Look out for Elephant, Gemsbok, Springbok,
the elusive Dik Dik as well as predators and the endangered Black
Rhino. Tonight, we will overnight at a Bush camp with a floodlit
waterhole. The afternoon will be spent at leisure alongside the
pool, and then proceed to a late afternoon game drive. Guests will
then return to camp for a traditional braai and sing-a-long.
Day 14
Tsumeb/Grootfontein, Namibia
Tsumeb-From 1905 the town was closely linked to the mining industry,
but has since ceased. The colorful Jacarandas, Flamboyants and Bougainvillea
have earned it the name of Namibia's Garden Town.
Grootfontein-The small town of Grootfontein, which serves the surrounding
cattle ranching community, is the last center on the road to Rundu
and far northeast. A historic fort from German Times built in 1896
and situated at the top of the hill around which the town developed.
Inclusive tours. Guests will depart the bush camp at 06h00 (Sunrise)
for an early morning game drive and return back to camp for breakfast.
After breakfast, Guests will proceed through the park to the Namutuni
camp for a short break and then proceed to Lake Otjikoto with its
mysterious green waters and myths. After Otjikoto Lake, a short
trip to the Tsumeb Mining Museum where a comprehensive collection
of rare minerals can be viewed. The afternoon will be spent at the
largest known Meteorite in the world, 'The Hoba Meteorite'. This
50 ton mass of nickel and iron which is between 100 and 300 million
years old crashed to earth some 30,000 to 80,000 years ago. A short
visit to the Grootfontein Museum and Fort. And back to Otjiwarongo,
where guests will board the train.
Day 15
Windhoek, Namibia
The central region is dominated by Namibia's Capital WINDHOEK. A
small but bustling city with a population of approximately 190000
people, situated in an airy basin 1654 meters above sea level in
the central highlands. This town built on many hills, is flanked
by the Alias Mountains to the south east, the Eros Mountains to
the northwest and the Khomas Hochland to the west. This city is
often described as a city with a continental atmosphere. This can
be ascribed to its Architecture - Historical Buildings dating back
to German Colonial Rule. (1894-1915).
Inclusive Options
This morning guests go to Windhoek on a City Tour visiting contemporary
historical sites, Alte Feste Castle and Museums in Windhoek. Visit
a local craft market. Spend the rest of the afternoon browsing around
Windhoek and perhaps to do a bit of shopping.
Day 16
Transfers - Windhoek, Namibia
Today guests will be transferred to the airport or to a hotel.
NOTE
Route Summary
Southbound: NAMIBIA: Windhoek - Etosha National Park - Swakopmund
- Sossusvlei - Kalahari Desert - Fish River - SOUTH AFRICA: Upington
- Graaf Reinet and Beaufort West - Klein Karoo - Stellenbosch and
Franschoek - Cape Town.
As most of the route is through malaria areas, we strongly recommend
that guests take preventative steps to avoid contracting malaria.
The necessary prophylactics should be taken and insect repellent
applied in the evenings. This is only applicable when in the Etosha
area.
As guests will travel through various countries they must ensure
that the necessary visas are obtained. Border crossings are at night
and the Train Manager oversees passport control so those Guests
are not disturbed during the night.
Included in the tour is a night spent in a tented camp at Sossusvlei

Visit Bloemfontein`s Museums and the Women`s Memorial. In the afternoon
visit Soetdoring Nature reserve and its Lion and Wild Dog breeding
camps. Or visit Kimberley, diamond capital of the world, to see
"the Big Hole" and scratch for 'Diamonds'. Depart for

Ladysmith & Drankensburg
Trace the course of the Anglo Boer War on a 'Battlefields' tour.Or
take a drive to the spectacular mountain range of Drakensberg. Return

Day 10
Durban
Durban is the subtropical playground of South Africa. The 'East
meets West' tour is a combation of Eastern and Western highlights

Day 11
Southern Zululand
In Shakaland enjoy sumptuous buffet lunch (cost extra) and cultural
show.
Tonight all guests are invited to the South African Meat "Braai'

Day 12
Northern Zululand
Hluhluwe and Umfolozi Park excursion will introduce you to old hunting
grounds of the Zulu Kings. The Train awaits us at South Africa border

Swaziland
Visit Mbabane, the Kingdom`s administrative capital.Enter South
Africa during the night arriving at Komatipoort Border Post. Minivans
are offloaded off the train to tour Kruger National Park. (B,D)

Kruger National Park
The only option available today is the famed Kruger national Park,
home to the 'Big Five'. Dinner and overnight on Board. (B,D)
Day 15
Panorama Route-Northern Drakensberg
Our route takes to throug Sabie, the Lone Creek Falls and, Mac Mac
Falls. Continue on to Pilgrims Rest and God`s Window and finally
to the spectacular Blyde River Canyon. Tonight will be our last
"Rock and Roll" 525 km run to Johannesburg. (B,D)
Day 16
Johannesburg - Pretoria - Soweto
Explore Johannesburg the "City of Gold' and also visit Pretoria,
the Administrative Capital. An option to visit Soweto is also available.

Pretoria and Soweto Tour
A city tour of Pretoria. Than visit Soweto, stopping at Nelson Mandela`s
house and Hector Peterson memorial. Depart for kaapmuiden in the

Kingdom of Swaziland
A city tour Mbabane, the kingdom`s administrative capital.
Optional lunch is at Ezulwini. Guest meet the train at Mpaka ( Swaziland

Maputo - Mozambique
Guests visit the Catholic Cathedral, Casa do Ferro, and grave of

Komatipoort
The train departs for Komatipoort in the late afternoon. Border

Kruger National Park
The Kruger National Park is home to the "Big Five". Guests
spend two days viewing game in the park. Dinner and overnights on

Panorama Route
Todays tour visits the spectacular Blyde River Canyon, Bourke`s
Luck Pot Holes, God`s Window, Mac Mac Falls, and the pioeering Gold

Southpanberg & Venda
Visit the Dzata ruins Papadi Falls and the market at Thohoyandou.

Great Zimbabwe
Visit Great Zimbabwe , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch (optional

Bulawayo & Motobo National Park
Bulawayo offers awealth of history and fine Edwardian achitecture.
Travel to Matobo Hills for a visit to the burial place of Cecil
John Rhodes and Bushman cave. In the afternoon a tour of the Natural
History Museum. In the evening visit the Amahosi Theatre.Dinner
and overnight on board.
Day 12
The Zambezi River
Visit mlibizi a very scenic resort on the Zambezi River. On arrival
have lunch (optional) and than embark on a 3- hour cruise up the
river to Elephant Bay. return to the train for overnight (B,D)
As an add-on option you can spend one night at a lodge in the Hwange
Game Reserve area.
Day 13
Hwange Game Reserve
Morning and afternoon game drive in Hwange National Park. Lunch
(optional) will be at the Hwange Safari Lodge. tonight the Tain
Departs for Victoris Falls whilst you enjoy dinner and overnight

Day 14
Livingstone-Zambia
Cross the Zambezi by bus over the famous rail/road bridge.Visit
the Zambian side of Victoria Falls, than to Livingstone to visit
Livingstone Museum and the Murabama market. Enjoy a spectacular
lunchtime cruise on the Zambezi River. Overnight on board in Victoria

Day 15
Chobe National Park-Botswana
Travel by bus to Botswana,home to the largest concentration of elephant
in the world. Enjoy game drives and a river cruise in Chobe Park.
Return to the train for dinner and overnight. (B,D)
Day 16
Victoria Falls
Join a guided tour through the Rain Forest to view the mighty Falls.
Than visit the craft market. Return to the train in time for the
final dinner an overnight on board. (B,D)
Day 17
Victoria Falls
Bidding a fond farewell (along with a promise to return ) you will
be transferred to Victoris Falls airport for your onward flights.
