DAY 1,2 DEPART YOUR HOME CITY, ACROSS THE PACIFIC TO BEIJING VIA KOREAN AIR. YOU "LOSE" A DAY CROSSING THE INTERNATIONAL DATELINE.
Day 3
Beijing
Upon arrival in Beijing, transfer to Jianguo Hotel for overnight accommodation. This afternoon is free for you to rest and relax. Around 7pm meet at a designated room of the hotel for a welcome reception, followed by a briefing and light dinner. (D)

Day 4
Beijing
After breakfast, sightseeing of Beijing, including Tian An Men Square, the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven before boarding the "China Orient Express". Dinner on board train. (B, L, D)

Day 5
Xian
Breakfast on board the train before arriving in Xian in the morning. Enjoy a talk on the ancient capital of Xian, then city sightseeing to the Small Wild Goose Pagoda, the Shaanxi provincial Museum and the City Wall. Lunch at a local restaurant. Enjoy a Tang Dynasty Dinner and Show tonight. Overnight at the Shangri-la hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 6
Xian
Breakfast at hotel, then board our private sightseeing bus for your visit to the famous life-sized Terracotta Warriors, buried 2,200 years ago in the first emperor's necropolis. Lunch at the most famous dumpling restaurant in Xian. Afternoon departure from Xian to Maijishan. Dinner on board. (B,L,D)

Day 7
Maijishan
Arrival in the early morning around 9am. Excursion to the famous Maijishan Caves 45 km from the station. Lunch at a local restaurant. Return for a late afternoon departure for Jiayuguan.(B,L,D)

Day 8
Jiayuguan
Breakfast onboard the train. Arrive in Jiayuguan in the early afternoon. Lunch onboard train. Sightseeing to the furthest north-west point of the Great Wall and the Jiayuguan Pass. Train departs in the early evening for Dunhuang. Lecture onboard. Dinner on the train. (B,L,D)

Day 9
Dunhuang
Breakfast on the train then take a bus ride to Dunhuang. Pay your first visit to Magao Caves, one of the most important groups of Buddhist Caves in the world which contains beautiful, vibrant coloured frescoes and carvings. Lunch at the hotel. Late afternoon visit to the Crescent Moon Lake and the Sand Dunes. Dinner and overnight at the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 10
Dunhuang
After breakfast, enjoy a talk on the Magao Caves and the Jade Gate in a private room of the hotel. Afterwards, you will be taken to the Magao Caves and Museum for your second visit for half a day. Lunch at hotel. Free time until departure for the train to Turpan. Overnight onboard train. Participate in the Romans and Mandarins Party tonight. (B,L,D)

Day 11
Turpan
Arrive in Turpan in the morning. The Turpan Basin is the site of the ancient kingdom of Gaochang and the garrison city of Jiaohe. It is the lowest area in China. Although Turpan is arid and extremely hot, it is favoured with abundant underground water resources, made possible through an ancient and ingenious system called "Karez" that carries water underground (from the nearby snow-covered mountains), thus protecting the water from evaporating in the desert. Sightseeing in Turpan will include the "Karez", the Emin Minaret and Jiaohe Ruins. Overnight at the Oasis Hotel. A special outdoor BBQ and folk dance show will take place tonight. (B,L,D)

Day 12
Turpan
Breakfast at hotel. Sightseeing of Turpan includes a tour of the ancient city of Gaochang and its necropolis, Astana Cemetery and the Bezeklik Caves (One thousand Buddha Caves) After lunch, you will also visit the Grape Valley. Depart in the evening by train to Kuche. Dinner on the train. (B,L,D)

Day 13
Kuche
Breakfast on the train. Sightseeing of Kuche and Kezil Caves 70 km away from city. Lunch at Kuche at Guisi Hotel. After lunch sightseeing to the big Mosque and local bazaar. Train leaves for Kashgar. Lecture. (B,L,D)

Day 14
Kashgar
Breakfast on the train. Morning arrival in Kashgar, once a trading centre on the ancient Silk Road linking China to the West, an exotic and colourful place for travelers for 2000 years. Upon arrival, sightseeing of the most fascinating town of the Silk Road (the sightseeing of the old city of Kashgar will be done on foot), then visit the Adkan Mosque. After this sightseeing, you will be transferred to the Kashgar hotel for overnight accommodation. A Farewell Lamb Banquet will be held at the VIP room of the hotel.* (B,L,D)

Day 15
Kashgar
After breakfast, enjoy the famous Kashgar Sunday Bazaar which still teems with traders, selling tree trunks and freshly cured leather, livestock, knives, scythes, hats, carpets, cloth, furniture and everything you can imagine. After lunch, visit "Kashgaris Tomb", the tomb of the Father of Kashgar, for whom the city is named, which is just 18 kilometres outside of town. The ride to the tomb will give us the opportunity to see a bit of the landscape and countryside of Kashgar. In the afternoon, leave Kashgar on the train to Urumqi. Dinner on board and take part in "Murder on the China Orient Express Train" game. (B,L,D)

Day 16
Urumqi
Breakfast onboard before the train arrives in Urumqi. After breakfast, say goodbye to the train and take a full day excursion through the foothills of the Heavenly Mountains to the Heavenly Lake with a boat ride on the lake. Lunch is especially arranged at a restaurant overlooking this emerald lake followed by a story telling on the meeting of the Queen Mother of the West and Emperor Wu. On the way back from the excursion, if time permits, we will visit a local carpet factory. Afterwards, transfer to the Holiday Inn for tonight's accommodation. Have a western buffet style dinner at hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 17
Urumqi/Beijing
After breakfast, visit the Museum of Urumqi with its famous mummy display. Then transfer directly to the airport for the flight to Beijing. Overnight at Beijing Jianguo Hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 18
Beijing/ Home city
Breakfast at hotel. This morning is free to pack, then transfer to the airport for your flight home or take an optional post tour of Shanghai. (B)

Beijing
Depart your home city, across the Pacific to Beijing via Korean Air. You "lose" a day crossing the International Dateline.

Day 3
Beijing
Upon arrival in Beijing, transfer to Jianguo Hotel for overnight accommodation. This afternoon is free for you to rest and relax. Around 7pm meet at a designated room of the hotel for a welcome reception, followed by a briefing and light dinner. (D)

Day 4
Beijing/Urumqi
After breakfast, check out of Hotel and enjoy a 3 hour sightseeing tour of Beijing on the way to the airport. The sightseeing will include Tian An Men Square, Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven. Early lunch on your own and on to the airport to catch the flight XO 9102 to Urumqi which takes off at 14:55 and arrives at 18:45. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the Holiday Inn for overnight accommodation. Western buffet dinner will be served at the hotel. (B,D)

Day 5
Urumqi
After breakfast, take a full day excursion through the foothills of the Heavenly Mountains to the Heavenly Lake with a boat ride included. Lunch is especially arranged at a restaurant overlooking this emerald lake followed by a story telling on the meeting of the Queen Mother of the West and Emperor Wu. On the way back from the excursion, visit the Museum of Urumqi with its famous mummy display. The rest of the evening free. (B,L,D)

Day 6
Urumqi/ Turpan
After breakfast check out of hotel and leave for Turpan. The Turpan Basin is the site of the ancient kingdom of Gaochang and the garrison city of Jiaohe. It is the lowest area in China. Although Turpan is arid and extremely hot, it is favoured with abundant underground water resources, made possible through an ancient and ingenious system called "Karez" that carries water underground (from the nearby snow-covered mountains), thus protecting the water from evaporating in the desert. A 2 hour drive through very special scenery. Check in to the Oasis Hotel for one night accommodation. After lunch at the hotel, a comprehensive sightseeing tour that includes the Emin Minaret and the Karez System will take place. Late this afternoon visit the site of Jiaohe, the ancient city of Turpan. (B,L,D)

Day 7
Turpan
Breakfast at hotel, followed by a sightseeing tour of Gaochang and its necropolis, Astana Cemetery and the Bezeklik Caves (One Thousand Buddha Caves). Lunch at the hotel, check out and on the way to the rail station stop at the Grape Oasis. Today you will board the "China Orient Express", your chartered vintage train on the Silk Road. (B, L, D)

Day 8
Dunhuang
This morning the train arrives in Liuyuan. After breakfast onboard, disembark with your overnight bag. On the way to Dunhuang we will pay our first visit to the Magao Grotto, one of the most important groups of Buddhist Caves in the world, which contain beautiful, vibrant coloured frescoes and carvings. After the visit, check into the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel. Afternoon is free. Around 4:30 pm, leave the hotel for the Sand Dunes. If you wish a camel ride to the Sand Dunes, the charge for 1/2 hour is 25 USD and for 1 hour 50 USD. Of course you can bargain. After visiting the sand dunes, a special party near the Crescent Moon Lake will be waiting for you. Return to the hotel for dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 9
Dunhuang/Jiayuguan
After breakfast, enjoy a talk on the Magao Grotto and the Jade Gate in a private room of the hotel. Afterwards, you will be taken to the Magao Caves and the Museum for your second visit for half a day, then return to the hotel for lunch. Afternoon is free for you to relax or to explore the town of Dunhuang. Depart around 3pm for Liuyuan Station. Dinner and overnight on the train. Romans and Mandarins Party onboard tonight. (B,L,D)

Day 10
Jiayuguan
Arrive in Jiayuguan in the morning. After breakfast, disembark for a 4 hour sightseeing tour that will include the most north west point of the Great Wall and the Jiayuguan Pass. If time permits, also visit the museum. Then board the train to have a late lunch, while the train departs for Xian. (B, L, D)

Day 11
Xian
Arrive in Xian. After breakfast, disembark for overnight accommodation at the Sheraton Hotel. We will board a private sightseeing bus and have a morning sightseeing tour of the world famous Terracotta Warriors. This afternoon is free. Enjoy a Tang Dynasty Dinner and Show in the evening. (B, L, D)

Day 12
Xian
Check out of hotel after breakfast. Pay a visit to the Shaanxi Provincial Museum and the City Wall in the morning. If time permits, Xuan Zang's Tomb will also be included. Lunch at the most famous dumpling restaurant in Xian. This afternoon, visit the Wild Goose Pagoda and the Mosque. Return to the train to have a Farewell dinner and participate in the mystery game of "Murder on the China Orient Express". (B,L,D)

Day 13
Beijing
Arrive in Beijing early in the morning. You have the option to rest or do whatever you wish such as shopping, antique or gallery hunting or walking tour of the Hutongs for today. Enjoy an authentic Peking duck dinner tonight. (B, L, D)

Day 14
Beijing/ Home City
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight home or take an optional post tour of
Shanghai. (B)
