THE CLASSIC TOUR ( 4 NIGHTS )
DAY 1
Edinburgh - Dalmally - Taynuilt
The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley Station around 14.00
and heads westward towards the majestic West Highland Line. At Dalmally,
we visit Inverawe Smokehouse and join the Campbell-Prestons in their
home to sample some of the delicacies over a glass of wine. We rejoin
the train for our informal dinner at Taynuilt where we stable overnight.

DAY 2
Taynuilt - Dunkeld - Kingussie - Boat of Garten
Passing through the historic town of Stirling, with its magnificent
royal castle, we make our way to Dunkeld where we disembark to visit
The House of Bruar, Scotland's most prestigious country store. Alternatively,
there is a nearby walk to the spectacular Falls of Bruar. From Blair
Atholl, we continue north through Dalwhinnie to Kingussie where we
disembark for our visit to Ballindalloch, one of Scotland's most romantic
castles. Set in the magnificent surroundings of the Spey Valley, Ballindalloch
exemplifies the elegant and comfortable country house so beloved of
Victorians in the Highlands. We return to the train at Boat of Garten
on the private Strathspey Railway for a formal dinner and overnight
stabling. After dinner, we enjoy entertainment in the Observation
Car.
DAY 3
Boat of Garten - Plockton - Kyle of Lochalsh
This morning we visit the Highland Wildlife Park, set in 260 acres
of beautiful Strathspey. All the animals here are indigenous to
Scotland and some are now extinct in the wild, whilst others are
endangered. We rejoin the train at Kingussie and head north to Inverness,
before turning west towards Kyle of Lochalsh, on what is arguably
the most scenic route in Britain. We disembark at Plockton where
we have free time to explore this picturesque Highland village.
There is the opportunity to join an exclusive seal trip on Loch
Carron, and at the same time savour the magnificent views across
the Isle of Skye and Applecross Mountains. Alternatively, we can
browse the local art gallery, walk in beautiful countryside, or
simply get to know the locals! We rejoin the train in Kyle where
we stable overnight. After a formal dinner, we enjoy entertainment
in the Observation Car.
DAY 4
Kyle - Keith - Dundee
After breakfast this morning, our motorcoach is waiting to take
us to Eilean Donan, the most photographed castle in Scotland. It
stands on a rocky promontory at the meeting point of three sea lochs.
Afterwards, we enjoy a driving tour of Skye "the Misty Isle".
As we explore this romantic island with its magnificent Cuillin
Mountains, we learn about its Gaelic culture and harsh history.
We return to the mainland and rejoin the train in Kyle. During lunch,
we retrace part of yesterday's route as far as Inverness before
heading east to Elgin. This afternoon, we have an exclusive opportunity
to experience life in a traditional working Highland distillery,
and sample some of the products! We rejoin the train for our informal
dinner as we head south through an area of mainly arable and dairy
farming to the "Granite City" of Aberdeen. We then follow
the coast through Stonehaven and Montrose before reaching Arbroath,
which is famous for its "smokies". We pass Carnoustie,
which has one of the many good golf courses in this region on our
way to Dundee for our overnight stabling.
DAY 5
Dundee - Edinburgh
The train leaves during breakfast this morning and crosses the magnificent
Tay and Forth railway bridges to arrive in Edinburgh around 09.30,
where our tour ends.

THE HIGHLAND FLING ( 2 NIGHTS )
DAY 1
Edinburgh - Aviemore - Boat of Garten
The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley around 13.30 and head
snorth over the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge. We continue through
the Kingdom of Fife, of which Macduff was once Thane, and then follow
the coast through Burntisland and Kirkcaldy as afternoon tea is
served. We pass through the 'Fair City' of Perth and on through
Dunkeld, Pitlochry and Dalwhinnie to Kingussie, where we disembark
for our visit to Ballindalloch, one of Scotland's most romantic
castles. Set in the magnificent surroundings of the Spey Valley,
Ballindalloch exemplifies the elegant and comfortable country house
so beloved of Victorians in the Highlands. We return to the train
at Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway for our informal
dinner and overnight stabling.

DAY 2
Boat of Garten - Elgin - Keith - Dundee
After breakfast, we disembark for our visit to Rothiemurchus Estate.
Here in acres of unspoilt countryside, we enjoy an activity-filled
morning of clay-pigeon shooting and off-road driving, or a coach safari.
We rejoin the train in Aviemore and enjoy lunch as we head north to
Inverness. Afterwards, we turn east to Elgin, where we disembark to
visit Johnston's Woollen Mill, established on the banks of the river
Lossie over 200 years ago and fames for its fine cashmere. We return
to the train in Elgin and travel the short distance to Keith for an
early evening visit to Strathisla Distillery. There we can experience
a traditional Scottish ceilidh and sample some of their products!
Afterwards, we rejoin the train for a formal dinner as we travel south
through Aberdeen, Arbroath and Carnoustie to Dundee, where we stable
overnight.

DAY 3
Dundee - Edinburgh
We leave Dundee this morning and return to Edinburgh by means of the
Tay and Forth Railway Bridges. Our tour ends in Edinburgh at 09.20.

THE CALEDONIAN RETREAT (2 NIGHTS)
DAY 1
Edinburgh - Dundee - Montrose - Keith
The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley around 14.30. We cross
the Firth of Forth by means of the magnificent Forth Railway Bridge,
and continue through the Kingdom of Fife, of which Macduff was once
Thane. We follow the coast through Burntisland and Kirkcaldy as afternoon
tea is served, and pass Through Cupar and Leuchers on our way to Dundee.
Here we disembark for our visit to Glamis, Seat of the Earl of Strathmore
and Kinghorne, and childhood home of H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen
Mother. We rejoin the train at Montrose and follow the east coast
northwards through Aberdeen whilst enjoying our informal dinner. We
arrive at the market town of Keith where we stable overnight.
DAY 2
Keith - Invergordon - Tain - Stirling
We leave Keith early this morning and travel through Elgin to Inverness,
before heading north to Invergordon. Here we disembark for our visit
to Glenmorangie distillery, situated in "The Glen of Tranquility",
overlooking the shores of the Dornoch Firth.We rejoin the train
at Tain and retrace our route south to Inverness, then onwards to
Blair Atholl where we disembark to visit the House of Bruar, Scotland's
most prestigious country store. Alternatively, there is a nearby
walk to the spectacular Falls of Bruar. An early formal dinner is
served before we disembark to experience a traditional Scottish
ceilidh in the private Shooting Lodge at Gleneagles. Afterwards
we rejoin the train in the historic town of Stirling, dominated
by its magnificent royal castle, and where we stable overnight.

Stirling - Edinburgh
We leave Stirling during breakfast this morning and return through
Larbert and
Linlithgow to arrive in Edinburgh at 09.40 where our tour ends.

DAY 1
Edinburgh - Perth - Stirling
The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley around 14.00 and heads
west through Linlithgow and Gleneagles to Perth, the "Fair
City". We disembark here to visit Glamis Castle, seat of the
Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and childhood home of H.M. Queen
Elizabeth The Queen Mother. We rejoin the train in Perth and travel
through the Kingdom of Fife, of which Macduff was once Thane, and
follow the coast through Kirkcaldy and Burntisland. From Dalmeny,
we then head west to Stirling with its magnificent Royal Castle
dominating the surrounding countryside. We stable overnight in the
historic town of Stirling and after a formal dinner enjoy entertainment
in the Observation Car.
DAY 2
Stirling - Edinburgh
We depart Stirling after breakfast this morning and return to Edinburgh
around 09.45 where our tour ends.

ISLE OF BUTE (2 NIGHTS)
DAY 1
Edinburgh - Dalmally - Taynuilt
The Royal Scotsman departs Edinburgh Waverley around 14.00 and heads
west to join the majestic West Highland Line. The train then travels
north, along the edge of Gare Loch and on to Dalmally, where we
disembark to visit Inverawe Smokehouse. Here we watch the locally
caught fish being cured and smoked, and afterwards join the Campbell-Prestons
in their home to sample some of the delicacies over a glass of wine.
We rejoin the train for our informal dinner at Taynuilt where we
stable overnight.
DAY 2
Taynuilt - Wemyss Bay - Bute - Dundee
We leave Taynuilt this morning, and head south to Wemyss Bay where
we take the ferry to Isle of Bute. The island embraces a variety
of landscapes; seashore, moorland, farmland and forest, and the
natural history, geography, geology and ancient history of the island
are revealed at every turn. From St Blane's Chapel at the south
of the island to the abandoned townships in Glen More at the north
end, it seems like every stone has its tale to tell. Today we visit
Mount Stuart, Britain's most spectacular Victorian Gothic house.
This was the architectural fantasy of the 3rd Marquess of Bute and
his architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. The stunning, mysterious
interiors reflect the romantic and scholarly Marquess's passion
for art, heraldry, astrology, mythology and religion. There is arguably
the finest privately held collection of family portraits in Scotland.
After lunch in the private Dining Room, we have time to explore
this magnificent house, its tranquil Rock Garden, the Wee Garden
containing rare plants from the southern hemisphere, the Kitchen
Garden, and the Victorian Pinetum. The Limetree Avenue leads visitors
to a secluded stretch of coastline, and one of the most beautiful
beaches in Scotland. We return to the mainland and rejoin the train
before making our way to Dundee where we stable overnight. After
our formal dinner, we enjoy entertainment in the Observation Car.
DAY 3
Dundee - Edinburgh
The train leaves during breakfast this morning and crosses the magnificent
Tay and Forth railway bridges to arrive in Edinburgh at 09.30, where
our tour ends.

SPECIAL TOURS
TASTE OF SCOTLAND (25 - 29 APRIL 2002)
This exhilirating four night journey into the heart of Scotland's
stunning landscape is a real must for food lovers everywhere. En
route, we visit Inverawe Somkehouse, producers of fine smoked salmon;
the world famous Gleneagles resort for a cookery demonstration and
lunch by masterchef Andrew Fairlie; and the magnificent Ballindalloch
Castle for a tutored wine tasting by quintessential wine merchant,
Bill Baker. We also head for the romantic Isle of Skye and Kinloch
Lodge, ancestral home of Lord and Lady Macdonald. Lady Claire Macdonald
is one of Scotland's foremost cookery writers and we join her for
a demonstration of her culinary skills. Other excursions include
a visit to the House of Bruar, the charming village of Plockton

In this four night journey, The Royal Scotsman travels through some
of the most picturesque scenery in Scotland and visits three of
the country's most beautiful golf courses: Royal Dornoch near Tain;
Nairn, overlooking the Moray Firth; and the world famous King's
course at Gleneagles. For non-golfing partners and spouses, there
are a number of fascinating excursions to be enjoyed including private
tours of the thirteenth century Dunrobin Castle and Glamis, childhood
home of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, as well as a visit
to Johnstons Woollen Mill and the historic town of Stirling.
