CUZCO TO MACHU PICCHU
The train journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu is a high of any trip
to the Andes. The scenery is simply spectacular, and the recently
refurbished Vistadomes allow you to enjoy it in comfort. The 3 ¼
hour journey takes you through a changing landscape. First there is
a steep climb out of town into the surrounding hillside, by a means
of a series of switchback turns known as "the zig zag".
Soon the train stops at the beautiful village of Poroy, and than descends
into the Scared Villages in the foothills of the Andes. From here
on, there are wonderful vistas of the mountains. And deep in its dramatic
canyon, the beautiful Urubamba River running through the Sacred Valley.
And what a destination awaits you! Machu Picchu, the Lost City of
the Incas, is one of the wonders of the Americas. The stunning ruins
of this ancient citadel, perched on a mountain peak high in the Andes,
are perhaps the greatest surviving testament of Inca civilization.

CUSCO TO PUNO
Another spectacular rail journey begins at Cuzco and runs south to
the historic city of Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Travellers
are advised that the train leaves from a different station in Cusco,
Wanchaq station. Also, you should be aware that on its journey it
ascends to a cooler climate. The gentle climb is breathtaking. The
first half of the journey is dominated by magnificent Andean Mountains,
towering over the deep valleys of the meandering Huatanay River. It
then reaches the gentler, rolling Andean Plains, where vicuna and
alpaca are often seen. Excellent dining is served in the observation
car. To reduce the danger of altitude sickness, oxygenation systems
have been installed on this train. The journey is broken by a scenic
stop at La Roya, which is also the highest point on the route.

AREQUIPA TO PUNO
The route from Arequipa to puno is the world`s highest passenger railway,
and according to many, the most beautiful. From Arequipa it is a short
journey to one of Peru`s lesser-known wonders: the Colca Canyon Home
of the Condor. Surprisingly, the grandest canyon of the Americas is
here in Peru: in fact it is thought to be the deepest ravine in the
world.
